The Hollywood Reporter had a poll commissioned about how political views affect people’s filmgoing habits. The results are interesting and basically say that you political views do make a difference in the types of movies you choose to go to. A star’s political views will make a difference when people are picking movies but that issue is more important to Republicans. 52% of Republicans take that into consideration compared to 36% of Democrats. That’s why producers hate when the stars of their big films get quoted about issues. Because it does matter to the box office.
Some of the results (of a 1,000 person sample):
35 percent of Republicans and 45 percent of Tea Partiers consider a celebrity’s political position before paying to see their films, compared with 20 percent of Democrats.
• Democrats go to the movies more and go on opening weekend while Republicans wait for DVDs.
• Republicans prefer family films and Democrats like edgy films.
• Republicans don’t like sex, violence and cursing and everyone thinks there is too much of all three in movies today.
• A majority of Democrats think Hollywood films are generally inspiring and morally uplifting and that America is portrayed well (62 percent) to 39 percent of Republicans.
