After seven years off the air, “Borgen” is coming back. The drama about Denmark’s first female prime minister will get a fourth season on Netflix, Deadline reports. The streamer is partnering with Danish broadcaster DR for the revival.
Starring Sidse Babett Knudsen as protagonist Birgitte Nyborg, “Borgen” originally aired in Denmark from 2010-2013. It also found a global audience thanks to its presence on streaming platforms.
The new season will reunite “Borgen’s” creative team, and is set to follow Birgitte in her new role as Foreign Minister, alongside her staff and the press covering her. Katrine Fønsmark (Birgitte Hjort Sørensen), Birgitte’s former head of press, will resume her journalism career.
Creator Adam Price is writing Season 4. SAM Productions is producing.
The new season will air on DR in 2022 before becoming available internationally on Netflix. The streamer has also acquired the rights to “Borgen’s” original run, and will launch it later this year.
“Ten years ago ‘Borgen’ helped redefine the global television landscape, showing that great stories can come from anywhere and be loved everywhere,” said Lina Brouneus, director of co-production and acquisition at Netflix. “We are immensely proud to partner with DR and the whole creative team to bring this worldwide phenomenon back.”
“Borgen’s” many accolades include a BAFTA, a Peabody, and two Danish Film Awards.
