A Female-Led “Doogie Howser” Reboot Is Being Developed at Disney+

Kourtney Kang is behind the project: UTA

A teenage girl will step into Doogie Howser’s scrubs. A female-led reboot of “Doogie Howser, M.D.” is in the works at Disney+, The Hollywood Reporter confirms. Hailing from Kourtney Kang, the potential project will see Neil Patrick Harris’ breakout role taken over by a half-Asian, half-white 16-year-old girl.

Currently titled “Doogie Kealoha, M.D,” the show will tell the story of Doogie, a “genius-level intellect who has breezed through college and medical school and is now working as a doctor in Hawaii,” the source details.

The original “Doogie Howser, M.D.” ran from 1989-93 on ABC.

Kang, whose credits include “Fresh Off the Boat” and “How I Met Your Mother,” is among “Doogie Kealoha, M.D’s” exec producers.

“Don’t be afraid for your voice to lead to trouble,” Kang has said. “I’m sort of outspoken and shoot from the hip, which in some situations is great and in others it’s a nightmare. Haha! And that’s okay. Sometimes I’ll say something sort of off the cuff and it charms everyone in the room, and sometimes it goes real bad. And that’s okay. You roll with the punches. Your voice will not work everywhere and it shouldn’t. It’s your voice. I mean don’t go in and be a jerk, but always be true to you. And then when you find the place your voice really works, you know it’s the place for you.”

The writer, director, and producer emphasized, “I’m grateful to every one of [my failures]. Failing means you got up to the plate. It’s also a time to evaluate. The key is to fail, and instead of scaling back, dream bigger.”
