Ana García is heading to Broadway. A musical adaptation of “Real Women Have Curves,” the 2002 coming-of-age pic about a Mexican-American teen, is in the works from “Waitress” producers Fran and Barry Weissler. “The Waiting Room” playwright and “Girl, Interrupted” screenwriter Lisa Loomer is adapting the screenplay for the stage, with brother and sister duo Jesse & Joy penning the music and lyrics. Sergio Trujillo (“Flashdance the Musical”) will direct. The “show would likely be the first Broadway musical with a Latine director, bookwriter, lyricist, and composer,” per Broadway World.
Directed by Patricia Cardoso and based on the play of the same name by Josefina López, the film version of “Real Women Have Curves” tells the story of Ana, a highschooler with college dreams who is being pressured by her mother to stay home and support her family by working at her sister’s textile factory. The Sundance winner marked America Ferrera’s breakout role.
No word on a timeline for when to expect “Real Women Have Curves” on the stage.
