The American Film Institute (AFI)’s complete 2019 festival program is in, and overall, 51 percent of the titles set to screen are women-directed. AFI Fest previously announced its Special Galas and Special Screenings sections, and just detailed its remaining slates. Melina Matsoukas’ feature directorial debut, “Queen & Slim,” is kicking off this year’s edition, which runs from November 14-21 in LA.
Highlighting emerging directors, the New Auteurs program includes “Hala,” Minhal Baig’s coming-of-age story about a first-generation Pakistani-American teenager, and “Lingua Franca,” Isabel Sandoval’s portrait of an undocumented Filipina trans woman working as a home health aide, among other titles.
Rose Glass’ “Saint Maud” will screen in the Midnight section, which focuses on genre pics. “Saint Maud” tells the story of a religious nurse determined to save the soul of her dying patient.
This year’s Cinema Legacy slate “turns the spotlight to the men and women behind the lens,” offering a “celebration of motion picture history and a special opportunity to celebrate classic films, and those who created them.” Offerings include “Varda by Agnès,” a guided cinematic tour of Varda’s work directed by the late French New Wave pioneer, and “Romantic Comedy,” Elizabeth Sankey’s exploration of how rom-coms have shaped culture.
Head over to the fest’s website to check out the complete 2019 lineup. You can find all of the women-directed and co-directed features that were just announced below.
