Hulu is taking notes from a loud woman. Variety reports that the streamer has given a six-episode series order to an adaptation of Lindy West’s 2016 memoir. Titled “Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman,” the book sees the former Jezebel blogger tackling topics such as online harassment, self-esteem, and prejudice against fat people. “Saturday Night Live” cast member Aidy Bryant is starring in the series and will write alongside West and Alexandra Rushfield (“Love,” “Parks and Recreation”). The latter is serving as showrunner.
Described as focusing on “a young woman who wants to change her life — but not her body,” the TV version of “Shrill” tells the story of Annie, an aspiring journalist bogged down by “bad boyfriends, sick parents, and a perfectionist boss, while the world around her deems her not good enough because of her weight. She starts to realize that she’s as good as anyone else, and acts on it.”
The series’ supporting cast includes Lolly Adefope (“The Spy Who Dumped Me,” “Damned”) and Luka Jones (“People of Earth.”)
The source specifies that Bryant will remain a cast member on “SNL.” “I Feel Pretty,” “Girls,” and “The Big Sick” are among her recent credits. She’s co-exec producing “Shrill.”
West now writes for The New York Times and The Guardian, among other outlets. She’s an exec producer on “Shrill,” as is “Pitch Perfect 2” director and star Elizabeth Banks.
“Portlandia’s” Carrie Brownstein is set to helm the second episode of the series.
