The winner of Sundance 2019’s U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize Award has a release date. Currently boasting a 100 percent “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, “Clemency” has been attracting Oscar buzz for star Alfre Woodard since its world premiere in Park City. It looks like Neon is taking the hint, and dropping the film December 27, “just in time for awards season,” Deadline notes.
Written and directed by Chinonye Chukwu, the drama tells the story of a morally conflicted prison warden struggling with her responsibility to carry out death penalty executions.
“I want [audiences to think] about the ecosystem of humanities tied to not just capital punishment, but incarceration and the prison industrial complex,” Chukwu told us. “Writing and directing this film was a multi-year soul journey that was transformative and emotionally exhausting,” she revealed. “Having to dig deep into the subject matter and the depth of human emotion explored in the film was challenging at times, but absolutely necessary.”
Chukwu made her feature debut with 2012’s “alaskaLand.” “Clemency” is her second feature.
Woodard received an Oscar nod in 1984 for “Cross Creek.” “Juanita,” “Luke Cage,” and “Empire” are among her more recent credits
