Charlotte Brändström is returning to Middle-earth. The Emmy-nominated helmer directed two episodes of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’s” debut season and is returning for Season 2 of the prequel. She will be joined by an all-women directing team. Deadline reports that Sanaa Hamri (“The Wheel of Time”) and Louise Hooper (“The Sandman”) will also be stepping behind the camera on the upcoming season of the Prime Video fantasy series, now in production in the UK.

Set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, the events of “The Rings of Power” precede the “Lord of the Rings” films and J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel by thousands of years. “Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth,” the source details. 

Brändström directed “Udûn” and “The Eye” in the series’ first season, which drew in over 100 million viewers worldwide. She will lead four episodes in Season 2, with Hamri and Hooper directing two episodes each.

With this news, “The Rings of Power” joins the ranks of other seasons helmed entirely by women, examples of which include multiple seasons of period drama “Call the Midwife” and all seven seasons of Ava DuVernay’s family drama “Queen Sugar.” Seasons 2-5 of “Better Things” were directed exclusively by Pamela Adlon, the dramedy’s co-creator and star, and the first season of Natasha Lyonne-starrer “Russian Doll” also boasted an all-women directing team. 

Brändström’s other credits include “The Witcher” and “Julie, chevalier de Maupin.” The latter, a miniseries, earned her an Emmy nom in 2005.
