Amy Poehler’s feature directorial debut, “Wine Country,” doesn’t hit Netflix until May, but the Emmy winner has already lined up another project with the streamer. The “Parks and Recreation” alumna is stepping behind the camera for “Moxie,” a coming-of-age pic based on Jennifer Mathieu’s novel of the same name. Deadline broke the news.
“Moxie” centers on a 16-year-old girl living in a small town. Inspired by her mom’s involvement with the Riot Grrrl movement in the ’90s, she decides to start a feminist revolution at her high school. Tamara Chestna penned the script.
Poehler’s Paper Kite acquired film rights to Mathieu’s book in 2016. At the time, we wrote that Poehler helming the pic would be a “dream scenario.”
Something of an “SNL” reunion, “Wine Country” is a comedy about longtime friends who celebrate a birthday with a trip to Napa. The ensemble’s cast includes Poehler, Tina Fey, and Maya Rudolph, among others. Poehler won an Emmy in 2016 for co-hosting “SNL” with Fey.
Poehler most recently co-created “Russian Doll” alongside Leslye Headland and Natasha Lyonne. The critically acclaimed “Groundhog Day”-esque series sees Lyonne dying and reliving her 36th birthday party over and over again.
