Get ready to see a bunch of “Angry Little Girls.” Gamechanger Films is developing a TV series and several holiday movies based on Lela Lee’s webcomic. Deadline broke the news.
Lee created the short “The Angry Little Asian Girl” in 1994, when she was attending UC Berkeley. She would go on to make more shorts featuring the character, and in 1998 self-published the “Angry Little Asian Girl” web comic and launched its online shop. More characters were added in 2000, leading to the “Angry Little Girls” comic and brand.
“Angry Little Girls” is anchored by Kim, “a 6-year-old Korean American girl … whose unapologetic rage against and questioning of injustices regarding race, gender stereotypes, and other societal ironies punctuate the goings-on in her life,” the source describes.
Kim and her fellow characters, including Deborah, Maria, Wanda, Xyla, Pat, and Bruce, will feature in Gamechanger’s projects. Gamechanger will also help expand the “Angry Little Girls” brand.
“Lela’s honesty, humor, and moxie perfectly aligns with our mission to elevate diverse and singular voices, and also offers us the privilege to provide a platform for new and longtime fans alike to experience her comic in a completely fresh way,” said Effie T. Brown, CEO of Gamechanger Films. “We at Gamechanger have always sought to pair the right IP with the right medium to maximize its potential and have no doubt that ‘Angry Little Girls’ is a brand that will speak to and captivate viewers from a massive spectrum of backgrounds.”
“What started as a creative catharsis from the pressures of my youth has blossomed into something I could have never imagined,” Lee added. “Effie and the team at Gamechanger are the perfect partners to bring this series to television and movies because, like I do, they understand that every female around the globe is angry and has the right to speak her mind.”
A 12-episode “Angry Little Asian Girl” animated series aired on Mnet in 2015, for which Lee voiced multiple characters. She has published several “Angry Little Girls” books, and the affiliated product line has been sold in malls in the U.S. and internationally.
Also an actress, Lee counts “Better Call Saul,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and “Scrubs” among her credits.
