Sony is bringing another women-driven “Spider-Man” universe story to the screen. Five months after the studio announced a “Silk” movie was in early development comes word of “Spider-Women,” an animated feature following three generations of women with Spidey powers. Deadline broke the news.
“Zoo” writer Bek Smith will pen the script and Amy Pascal is producing. No word on a director yet.
No character details have been made public, but it’s likely “Spider-Women” will feature Spider-Woman/Spider-Gwen, Gwen Stacy’s alter-ego. In her own series of comics, the Marvel character was bitten by a radioactive spider instead of Peter Parker.
Should the film move forward, the “Spider-Women” will be in good company, as there are several women-centric superhero stories on the way. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s “Captain Marvel” hits theaters March 8, 2019, Cathy Yan’s “Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)” is scheduled for a February 7, 2020 release, and Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman 1984” is due June 5, 2020. Cate Shortland’s standalone “Black Widow” movie is also in the works.
Of course, there is also “Silk,” whose titular heroine, aka Cindy Moon, was also bitten by a radioactive spider. Her powers include the ability to shoot webs from her fingertips, photographic memory, Silk Sense (a ramped-up version of Spider-Sense), and super speed. Pascal is producing that project as well.
Pascal’s credits include ““The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” “Molly’s Game,” and the latest “Spider-Man” franchise. The live-action “Barbie” and Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” are among her upcoming projects.
Smith worked on rewrites for “Captain Marvel” after participating in the Marvel Writer program. Next, she’s rewriting an untitled LEGO movie for Rideback and Warner Bros.
