Ann Dowd is heading from Gilead to a convent. The “Handmaid’s Tale” actress will star alongside Essie Davis (“The Babadook”) and Jessica Barden (“The End of the F****** World”) in “Lambs of God,” a Gothic drama about three nuns, Deadline confirms. The four-part series will air next year on Foxtel in Australia, and there are plans to find distribution partners in the U.S.
Written by Sarah Lambert, “Lambs of God” centers on the Sisters of St Agnes, who “must defend their lives, existence, and beliefs” when a handsome priest (Sam Reid, “Belle”) “attempts to sell their dilapidated monastery. What unfolds is an epic and fantastical tale of faith, love, and redemption,” the source hints. The story is based on Marele Day’s 1997 novel of the same name.
The show is currently in production in Australia. Jeffrey Walker (“Modern Family,” “Difficult People”) is directing.
Dowd won an Emmy last year for her portrayal of Aunt Lydia in dystopian drama “The Handmaid’s Tale.” The Elisabeth Moss-starrer is currently in its second season on Hulu. The “Leftovers” alumna has a role in “Hereditary,” a horror pic set to bow June 8.
Davis’ recent credits include “The White Princess,” “Assassin’s Creed,” and “Game of Thrones.”
Barden’s latest film, “The New Romantic,” premiered at SXSW in March. Written and directed by Carly Stone (“Kim’s Convenience”), the romantic comedy follows a college student and journalist who becomes a sugar baby to pay off her debt and write a story about the experience. “Penny Dreadful,” “The Lobster,” and “Coronation Street” are among her previous credits. No word on whether her Netflix dark comedy “The End of the F****** World” will return for a second season.
