Anna Odell is set to kick off the 2018 edition of the Stockholm International Film Festival. According to ScreenDaily, the fest will host the world premiere of “X&Y,” the Swedish artist and filmmaker’s follow-up to her 2013 directorial debut “The Reunion.” Starring Odell as a fictionalized version of herself, “X&Y” is an exploration of identity. The opening film will also be in competition at the fest.
Of 22 narrative features in competition, nine are directed by women, amounting to 41 percent of the slate. Besides “X&Y,” other women-helmed titles include Nadine Labaki’s “Capernaum,” a drama about a boy who sues his parents for bringing him into a world of pain and suffering, and Jasmin Mozaffari’s “Firecrackers,” a portrait of best friends desperate to escape their small town.
The fest also features a documentary competition, comprised of nine titles. Four are directed by women, or about 44 percent. Among the titles set to screen is Naziha Arebi’s “Freedom Fields,” the story of an all-female soccer team in Libya.
Combined, 42 percent of films in the doc and narrative feature programs are helmed by women.
The fest runs from November 7-November 18. “American Psycho” and “Alias Grace” helmer Mary Harron is set to receive the lifetime achievement award.
