Back in September it was announced that “Daughters of the Dust” writer-director Julie Dash has a drama about Rosa Parks in the works from Invisible Pictures. Now Deadline is reporting that another pic about the trailblazing activist has been added to the pipeline. Hailing from Winter Slate Entertainment, the project is titled “Rosa.”
Penned by Charlie Kessler (“Lapham Rising”) and Hamid Torabpour (“Zombies”), “Rosa” will “chronicle the first 24 hours as they unfold after the arrest of Parks on December 1, 1955,” according to the source. The project will also explore Parks’ involvement in the civil rights movement before and after she famously refused to relinquish her seat to a white passenger on an Alabama bus.
Serving as a consulting producer on “Rosa” is Jeanne Theoharis, Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Brooklyn College and author of the award-winning book “The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks.”
“While most Americans have heard of Rosa Parks, the details of what happened on the night she was arrested, and her lifetime of political courage and activism, are largely unknown,” Theoharis said in a statement to Deadline. “The real story of Rosa Parks is far different, and even more inspiring and relevant for our times than the tale most children learn in school.”
A portion of “Rosa’s” proceeds will go to The Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development.
Parks died in 2005.
