The AFI Directing Workshop for Women (DWW) is now accepting applications for its 2020-21 program. Open to women and nonbinary directors with at least three years of professional experience, DWW offers eight participants the chance to complete a short or a digital series in a hands-on, immersive training environment. The workshop itself is tuition free, but participants are responsible for raising funds for their projects.
DWW will last approximately 16 months. Among the mandatory activities are a four-week workshop intensive, several weekend workshops, and the DWW Showcase screening. After the program ends, participants will work on their projects’ pre-production, production and post-production, with set delivery dates.
Applications require a narrative statement, a creative statement, short answers, a résumé, a bio, letters of recommendation, a script, directing samples, and all the necessary releases.
A team of alumnae will select about 80 candidates from the initial pool of applicants. They will be interviewed by DWW staff and alumnae. Twenty interviewees will be selected for consideration by a Final Selection Committee of working directors, alumnae, and staff. From there, eight participants and two alternates will be chosen.
Robin Cloud, Revati Dhomse, Ashley Eakin, Tiffany Huang, Marie Jamora, Bridget Moloney, Lara Panah-Izadi, and Nicole Taylor-Roberts make up the current DWW class.
Applications for the 2020-21 DWW are due September 4. Find more info or apply at AFI’s website.
