Awkwafina is set to save the world again. The Golden Globe-nominated actress is following up her role as a heroic warrior in Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” by teaming up with Atsuko Hirayanagi to bring “The Last Adventures of Constance Verity” to the big screen. The “Crazy Rich Asians” breakout will star in the Independent Spirit Award-nominated filmmaker’s take on the 2016 fantasy adventure novel of the same name. Deadline broke the news.
The pic will tell the story of Constance Verity who, “for mysterious reasons, was thrust into a battle with the supernatural the moment she was born, and has been saving the world from disaster ever since. Now in her thirties, Connie’s biggest dream is to live a simple life – settle down with a boyfriend, hold a boring desk job, find some friends, and just be normal. Unfortunately, it’s not so easy to walk away from the supernatural if you are, in fact, the chosen one,” the source details.
Awkwafina received a Golden Globe for her leading role in Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell.” “Jumanji: The Next Level” and “Ocean’s 8” are among her other film credits. Her semi-autobiographical Comedy Central show, “Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens,” was renewed for a second season ahead of its series premiere. No word on when to expect the second season to drop.
Hirayanagi made her feature debut with 2017’s “Oh Lucy!” The critically acclaimed comedic drama premiered at Cannes’ Critics’ Week and received nods for Best Female Lead (Shinobu Terajima) and Best First Feature at the 2018 Indie Spirit Awards.
