Film nerds, rejoice. Ava DuVernay will be paying tribute to her fellow filmmakers with “One Perfect Shot,” a docuseries that explores what makes some of film and TV’s most iconic shots “so perfect,” Variety reports. The “When They See Us” creator will exec produce and narrate the HBO Max title.
Inspired by the Twitter account of the same name, each episode of “One Perfect Shot” will see “a director given an array of visual tools to pull back the curtain” on their most enviable shots, the source details. “The directors will literally enter each shot, walking through the scene in 360 moments that allow viewers to join an immersive exploration of moviemaking. Each filmmaker will share their obstacles, challenges, lessons, and triumphs as they detail how they created their cinematic achievements. They will also present one shot from an auteur who deeply influenced them, outlining the inspiration that catalyzed their own imagination.”
“I’ve long wanted to create a series about the art of directing,” said DuVernay. “To chronicle the craft of great filmmakers is a dream come true for me and all of us at ARRAY Filmworks. We’re thrilled that our partners at Warner Horizon Unscripted Television embraced this idea and look forward to fully geeking out over movies with our friends at HBO Max.”
DuVernay, who just became the first female filmmaker to win the prestigious Gish Prize, has another series in the works with HBO Max, an adaptation of Vertigo comic “DMZ.” Rosario Dawson stars as a medic searching for her lost son. Her other upcoming projects include an adaptation of Octavia Butler sci-fi “Dawn” for Amazon and DC comic adaptation “The New Gods.”
“When They See Us,” DuVernay’s Netflix miniseries about five young men of color who were wrongfully convicted of raping a white woman in Central Park in the early ’90s, won a Peabody and two Emmy Awards. “Cherish the Day” and “Queen Sugar” are among her other TV projects. Her feature credits include “Selma” and “A Wrinkle in Time.”
Earlier this summer DuVernay was elected to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors.
