Ava DuVernay, Whoopi Goldberg, & More Elected to Academy Board, Number of Women & POC Hits New High

DuVernay

Ava DuVernay, Whoopi Goldberg, and “A Star Is Born” producer Lynette Howell Taylor are among the 16 people who have been elected or reelected to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board Of Governors this year. With these elections, the board is seeing record numbers of women and people of color, Deadline confirms. The number of women board members has increased from 25 to 26, and the number of POC has risen from 11 to 12.

DuVernay and Taylor have both been elected for their first terms. The former is joining the directors branch, and the latter the producers branch. Other members entering their first term include Debra Zane (casting directors) and Linda Flowers (makeup and hairstylists). Overall, six first-timers were voted to the board.

Goldberg has been re-elected to the actors branch. Mandy Walker (cinematographers), Isis Mussenden (costume designers), Kate Amend (documentary), Christina Kounelias (marketing and PR), and Teri E. Dorman (sound) are also among the 10 returning members.

“The Academy’s 17 branches are each represented by three governors, who may serve up to three consecutive three-year terms,” Deadline notes. “The Board of Governors sets the Academy’s strategic vision, preserves the organization’s financial health, and assures the fulfillment of its mission.”

The board plans to convene today via video conference to discuss the 2021 Oscars. It’s expected that the awards ceremony, originally scheduled for February 28, will be pushed to March or April due to the wide-ranging effects the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the film industry. Because of the coronavirus-related closing of movie theaters, the Academy has decided to allow streaming and VOD titles to compete in the 2021 race without the usual requirement of a seven-day theatrical run.
