Awkwafina will be “Nora From Queens” for at least two seasons. Deadline reports the Golden Globe winner’s upcoming Comedy Central show, “Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens,” received an early second season renewal. The series premieres January 22.
Created by Awkwafina and Teresa Hsiao (“Fresh Off the Boat”), “Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens” sees its star playing a slightly fictionalized version of herself. Nora is a somewhat directionless late-20-something living with her father (BD Wong, “Mr. Robot”) and grandma (Lori Tan Chinn, “Orange Is the New Black”) in Queens. She’s trying to figure out what she wants from life — and how she’s gonna get it. “SNL’s” Bowen Yang also co-stars.
Awkwafina, whose real name is Nora Lum, Hsiao, Karey Dornetto (“Portlandia”), and Lucia Aniello (“Broad City”) are among the show’s exec producers. “Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens” also features an all-women writers’ room.
“We are in awe of Awkwafina’s creative genius on every level and we could not be more excited to embark on a season two with the entire Lin family in ‘Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens,’” said Sarah Babineau and Jonas Larsen, Co-Heads of Original Content at Comedy Central.
Awkwafina became the first Asian woman to win the Golden Globe for best lead actress in a movie comedy/musical earlier this month. She took home the prize for her work in “The Farewell,” Lulu Wang’s semi-autobiographical story about a family who lies to their grandmother about her terminal cancer diagnosis.
“Crazy Rich Asians,” “Ocean’s Eight,” and “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” are among Awkwafina’s credits. You can catch her in theaters now in “Jumanji: The Next Level” and next in “Breaking News in Yuba County,” a dramatic thriller about a woman who tries to get away with killing her husband. The pic is expected to hit theaters sometime this year.
