Awkwafina’s meteoric rise continues. This year has seen the YouTube sensation star in “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Ocean’s Eight.” She also hosted “Saturday Night Live.” Now Deadline reports that the rapper is getting her own show.
Comedy Central has given a series order to “Awkwafina,” a half-hour comedy from Rory Scovel and Gary Sanchez Productions. Starring Awkwafina as a “twenty-something living in Queens, striving for a larger than life existence while living with her father and grandmother,” the show will be written by Awkwafina, Karey Dornetto (“SMILF”), and Teresa Hsiao (“Family Guy”). Lucia Aniello (“Rough Night,” “Broad City”) is directing.
“I’ve been watching Comedy Central since I was old enough to hold a remote, and so many of their shows have defined who I am today,” said Awkwafina. “I am so honored to be given their platform to tell the story of an Asian American girl against the backdrop of the city I was raised.”
Sarah Babineau and Jonas Larsen, EVP and Co-Heads of Talent and Development for Comedy Central, added, “This is a special project. Inspired by Awkwafina’s formative years in Queens, the show is both a personal look into one of comedy’s brightest stars and also a relatable, funny profile of a young hustler’s struggle. We’re happy to be used as a pawn in Awkwafina’s elaborate, EGOT endgame.”
Awkwafina is among the project’s exec producers.
“Representation starts both in front of and behind the camera,” the multi-hyphenate has said. Asked what the industry can do to make improvements in representing Asians on-screen, she observed, “I think a big reason there aren’t a lot of our stories reflected is people don’t know how to write for us or think they can’t write for us. So I think for any minority group, you need to have writers who can reflect those stories and tell them honestly. It’s important to give people a chance. Take a chance on opening up roles, even leads, for actors of color.”
