Since her breakout performance in “Crazy Rich Asians,” Awkwafina has been adding projects to her slate left and right. Deadline reports that the coveted star has just signed on to yet another project: Legendary’s “The Last Adventure of Constance Verity.”
Adapted by A. Lee Martinez’s novel of the same name, “The Last Adventure of Constance Verity” follows the titular character looking for a change. Since birth, she’s protected the world from the supernatural, but now all she craves is a taste of the “normal life” she’s missed out on. John Raffo penned the script. Martinez is currently working on a third Constance Verity installment, so this project smells of franchise potential.
Awkwafina’s upcoming projects include “The Prom,” starring Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman, “Breaking News in Yuba County,” and Marvel’s forthcoming “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” She is also working on a semi-autobiographical Comedy Central series, complete with an all-female writing room and female directors such as “Russian Doll” star Natasha Lyonne.
She currently stars in Lulu Wang’s Sundance hit “The Farewell,” a dramedy about a Chinese family who lies to their grandmother about her terminal diagnosis. Wang told Women and Hollywood that Awkwafina was her first choice for the film’s lead role. “She has all of this emotional depth she wasn’t leveraging in her other work,” Wang said. “She usually gets cast as a comedic sidekick… We all went into it with an open mind and were really happy when she turned out to be perfect.”
“The Farewell” is in theaters now.
