Comedy Central has unveiled the title and stacked directing roster for Awkwafina’s upcoming series. As previously announced, Natasha Lyonne, co-creator, star, writer, director, and exec producer of Emmy favorite “Russian Doll” will step behind the camera for “Awkwafina is Nora From Queens.” She’s being joined by her “Russian Doll” and “But I’m a Cheerleader” director Jamie Babbit, “Broad City” and “Rough Night” helmer Lucia Aniello, and “The Other Two” director Anu Valia, among others. Variety confirmed the news.
A half-hour comedy loosely based on Awkwafina’s experience growing up in Queens, “Awkwafina is Nora from Queens” sees the “Crazy Rich Asians” breakout being “raised by her dad (BD Wong) and grandma (Lori Tan Chinn) alongside her cousin (Bowen Yang), … [leaning] on her family as she navigates life and young adulthood in outer borough-NYC.”
The series, which boasts an all-women writing team, is expected to premiere in January 2020.
You can catch Awkwafina on the big screen in “The Farewell,” in theaters now. Written and directed by Lulu Wang and based on an actual lie, “The Farewell” centers on U.S.-raised Billi (Awkwafina), who returns to Changchun, China. Doctors have revealed that the family’s matriarch, Nai-Nai, has mere weeks to live. Everyone knows — except Nai-Nai herself, and the family intends to keep it that way. To ensure that her final days are happy ones, they celebrate an expedited wedding as an excuse to bring the family together.
“When I was little, I was completely starved for idols, so I had a dream of becoming something that didn’t exist,” Awkwafina has said. She only recognized herself in Margaret Cho. “But I never saw anyone else—it was really only her,” she explained. “So I think that in carving out my place, a lot of it had to do with there being a lack. Seeing a ghost town helped me—because I was like, Well, it could exist.”
“The Farewell” has grossed over $16.5 million. The critically acclaimed comedy’s production budget was between $3-3.5 million.
