Barbara Kopple is adding another project to her eclectic resume. The Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker is shifting her focus from the Iran hostage crisis to the catwalk. Deadline reports that the “Desert One” director is attached to helm “The Supermodels,” an Apple TV+ docuseries.
The series will include interviews with Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, and Christy Turlington, and “revisit the quartet’s modelling careers and how they disrupted the 90s’ fashion scene,” the source details. Campbell, Crawford, Evangelista, and Turlington are among the project’s exec producers.
“We hope our journey seen in the docuseries will encourage, motivate, and inspire young people around the world,” said Campbell. “We look forward to this great adventure ahead with director Barbara Kopple.”
Crawford noted that the series plans to “explore the dynamic personalities” and “shifts in media and culture that helped shape and define this iconic era.” She added, “I’m excited to reunite with my friends to both celebrate and examine the way supermodels transcended the traditional perceptions and limits of modeling in the fashion industry through time.”
Kopple’s “Harlan County, USA” and “American Dream” won Oscars for Best Documentary Feature. Her other films include “New Homeland,” “A Murder in Mansfield,” and “Gigi Gorgeous: This Is Everything.” Earlier this year she released “Desert One,” a doc exploring the story behind Operation Eagle Claw, a top-secret military rescue attempt orchestrated by President Carter.
Apple TV+ recently released a video announcing “Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry,” a doc about the five-time Grammy winner.
