The CW has ordered three women-driven series for its 2019-2020 season. Variety confirms the network picked up the Ruby Rose-led “Batwoman,” “Riverdale” spinoff “Katy Keene,” and a “Nancy Drew” reboot.
Based on the DC Comics character, “Batwoman” is from writer and executive producer Caroline Dries (“The Vampire Diaries”). “Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane (Rose) soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence,” the source hints.
Maggie Kiley (“American Horror Story: Cult”) directed “Katy Keene’s” pilot. Inspired by the Archie Comics character, the series sees Katy Keene (Lucy Hale) and “Riverdale’s” Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray) pursuing their fashion design and musical dreams, respectively. “Their world is populated with kindred-spirit starving artists, including mysterious socialite Pepper Smith (Julia Chan) and Broadway-bound performer Jorge Lopez – and his drag queen alter ego, Ginger (Jonny Beauchamp).”
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”) is writing and exec producing the show with “Riverdale’s” Michael Grassi.
“Nancy Drew” centers on the amateur detective (Kennedy McMann) during the summer after high school graduation. “She thought she’d be leaving her hometown for college, but when a family tragedy holds her back another year, she finds herself embroiled in a ghostly murder investigation, and along the way, uncovers secrets that run deeper than she ever imagined,” Variety details.
Noga Landau (“The Magicians”) and “Gossip Girl” creators Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz are writing and exec producing “Nancy Drew.” Lis Rowinski and Melinda Hsu Taylor will also serve as executive producers.
