“Alcarràs” has landed the top honor from the 2022 Berlin International Film Festival. Carla Simón’s second feature, a drama about a family of peach farmers in Catalonia that features a cast of non-professional actors, won the Golden Bear for best film.
Simón, who previously took home the Berlinale’s best first feature award for “Summer 1993,” was one of many women filmmakers to be recognized at the fest. Claire Denis won the Silver Bear for best director for Juliette Binoche-starrer “Fire,” a relationship drama set in Paris.
“Robe of Gems,” Natalia López’s feature debut about a missing person case, received a special jury award.
Kurdwin Ayub was honored with the Best First Film Award for “Sonne,” a coming-of-age story about three friends in a Muslim community who become local celebrities after shooting a music video.
Ruth Beckermann’s “Mutzenbacher” won best film in the Encounters section. The doc sees men auditioning by reading from “Josefine Mutzenbacher, or the Life Story of a Viennese Whore, as Told by Herself.” Anastasia Veber’s “Trap,” a doc about Olympic hopefuls, was named best short film.
Meltem Kaptan scored the Silver Bear for best leading performance for “Rabiye Kurnaz,” a portrait of a mother fighting to get her son released from Guantanamo, and Laila Stieler won best screenplay for the drama. Best supporting honors went to Laura Basuki for Kamila Andini’s political drama “Before, Now and Then.”
The Berlinale kicked off on February 10, and the awards ceremony took place yesterday, February 16. Head over to The Hollywood Reporter to check out all of the winners.
