A movie about the personal and political lives of Angela Merkel, the popular leader of Germany, is been slated for a 2017 release.
The biopic will hit theaters during an election year, in which Merkel is expected to win a fourth term. The film will be written by journalist Dirk Kurbjuweit, who has penned two books about the chancellor.
“She is charming and known worldwide,” said producer Walid Nakschbandi in a statement. “She causes quite a stir, she gets involved. It’s time to film her life for a worldwide audience.”
“I have been following Merkel’s political path for many years — critical, but always spellbound,” he continued. “She is the most exciting politician of our time.”
Merkel was a research scientist before becoming Germany’s first woman chancellor. She is the de facto leader of the European Union and previously served as her country’s Minister of the Environment and Minister of Women and Youth.
