Veteran producers Bonnie Arnold and Mireille Soria have been named the new co-presidents of DreamWorks Animation, the studio whose last picture with a female protagonist was six years ago (2009’s Monsters vs. Aliens).
Arnold and Soria are the lead producers of two of the studio’s most successful franchises: How to Train Your Dragon and Madagascar, respectively. Both women have spent more than a decade at DreamWorks and more than three decades in filmmaking.
“Great storytelling is the heart of DreamWorks Animation, and we are honored and excited to help shape the movies that will entertain audiences around the world,” said Arnold and Soria in a joint statement. “DreamWorks has long been our home, and we can’t wait to begin working with all of the studio’s outstanding filmmakers and artists!”
Let’s hope that Arnold and Soria will use their positions to bring more tales about girls and women (or even female animals) to the big screen. As for DreamWorks, their next project, Home (out March 27), appears to (finally!) feature a female protagonist, who’ll be voiced by Rihanna.
