Brenda Chapman Launches Production Company, Signs First-Look Deal at Fox

Not only has Brenda Chapman lined up her next gig, she’s started her own production company. According to Deadline, the “Brave” co-director has launched ‘Twas Entertainment alongside her husband, Kevin Lima (“Enchanted”). The pair also inked a first-look deal with 20th Century Fox to produce live-action, hybrid, and animated movies.

Chapman and Lima’s first project under the deal will be Fox Family vehicle “The Cartoon Touch.” No plot details have been announced.

“For years, we have worked parallel paths creating films we’re each extremely proud of,” Chapman and Lima stated. “Now, by combining our talents in ‘Twas Entertainment, we’re stepping into a new and thrilling phase of our careers and are looking forward to gathering old and new collaborators who share our goal: family films with big heart, infectious humor, and genuine intelligence.”

Chapman and Lima previously worked together on “The Little Mermaid” and “Beauty and the Beast.”

With “Brave,” Chapman became the first woman to direct a feature animated film at a major studio. Inspired by Chapman’s relationship with her daughter, the film sees a rebellious young woman scrambling to save her mother from curse. Frustratingly, Pixar didn’t trust Chapman to execute her own vision and took her off the project during production and replaced her with Mark Andrews.

In a piece for The New York Times, Chapman linked the “devastating” experience to Hollywood’s overall treatment of women. “This was a story that I created, which came from a very personal place, as a woman and a mother,” she explained. “To have it taken away and given to someone else, and a man at that, was truly distressing on so many levels. But in the end, my vision came through in the film. It simply wouldn’t have worked without it (and didn’t at one point), and I knew this at my core.” She concluded, “Sometimes women express an idea and are shot down, only to have a man express essentially the same idea and have it broadly embraced. Until there is a sufficient number of women executives in high places, this will continue to happen.”

Chapman won the Best Animated Feature Oscar for “Brave” with Andrews. She previously co-directed “The Prince of Egypt.” Her next project, “Come Away,” is a live-action origin story about Alice of “Alice in Wonderland” and Peter Pan. It’s currently in pre-production.
