“Bridgerton” Spinoff About Queen Charlotte Greenlit By Netflix

Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) in "Bridgerton": Liam Daniel/ Netflix

Looks like Lady Whistledown missed the scoop: The Hollywood Reporter confirms that a “Bridgerton” spinoff has received a series order from Netflix. Currently untitled, the limited series will be penned by Shonda Rhimes and will tell the origin story of Queen Charlotte, who is portrayed by Golda Rosheuvel in “Bridgerton.”

Besides revisiting “the rise and love life of a young Queen Charlotte,” the series, which counts Rhimes among its exec producers, will “include the stories of young Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell) and Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh),” THR notes.

“Many viewers had never known the story of Queen Charlotte before ‘Bridgerton’ brought her to the world, and I’m thrilled this new series will further expand her story and the world of ‘Bridgerton.’ Shonda and her team are thoughtfully building out the ‘Bridgerton’ universe so they can keep delivering for the fans with the same quality and style they love. And by planning and prepping all the upcoming seasons now, we also hope to keep up a pace that will keep even the most insatiable viewers totally fulfilled,” Netflix’s Bela Bajaria said in a statement.

Netflix renewed “Bridgerton,” the streamer’s biggest hit thus far, for Seasons 3 and 4 ahead of its Season 2 premiere. No word on when to expect the sophomore season to drop. Set in Regency era London and based on Julia Quinn’s novels of the same name, the romance tells the story of the Bridgerton family. Season 1 followed the eldest daughter of the family, Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor), and her relationship with the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page). Season 2 will focus on Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s (Jonathan Bailey) quest for love.

Jess Brownell (“Scandal”) has been tapped to serve as showrunner for Seasons 3 and 4.

“As we continue to expand the world of ‘Bridgerton,’ we now have the opportunity to devote even more of the Shondaland fold to the ‘Bridgerton’-verse,” Rhimes commented. “We’ve worked with Jess Brownell for over a decade and have long wanted to find the right project to place in her hands. When it came time to pass the baton, I knew this unique voice was vital to the future of the show.”
