The 18th Zurich Film Festival (ZFF) will celebrate Charlotte Gainsbourg for her “exceptional acting.” According to a press release, the “Nymphomaniac” star will receive the festival’s Golden Eye award September 26. Her latest film, “The Almond and the Seahorse,” is also set to make its world premiere.
With nearly 80 screen credits to her name, Gainsbourg has been acting since childhood. She won the Most Promising Actress César for “L’effrontée” and the Best Supporting Actress César for “La bûche.” She received Cannes’ Best Actress prize for “Antichrist.” She worked with Agnès Varda on “Kung-Fu Master!” and “Jane B. for Agnes V.” and Julie Bertuccelli on “The Tree.” “Melancholia,” “Nymphomaniac” Volumes I and II, and “I’m Not There” are also among Gainsbourg’s major credits.
Gainsbourg is an award-winning singer-songwriter as well, and directed “Jane by Charlotte,” a documentary about her mother, Jane Birkin.
“Charlotte Gainsbourg is one of the most versatile character actresses in European cinema,” stated Christian Jungen, ZFF’s Artistic Director. “She is renowned for her bold choice of roles: Whether horror thriller or romantic comedy, avant-garde drama or Hollywood mainstream, she has the ability to give her characters human depth and credibility across all genres. And she is one of those rare actresses who can captivate with her charisma and carry an entire movie on her own.”
Co-starring Rebel Wilson, “The Almond and the Seahorse” is based on Kaite O’Reilly’s 2008 play of the same name. Gainsbourg and Wilson portray an archaeologist and an architect dealing with traumatic brain injuries and strained relationships.
ZFF 2022 will run September 22-October 2.
