Cher Horowitz is about to make her off-Broadway debut and now the iconic virgin that can’t drive may be heading back to multiplexes. A “Clueless” remake is in early development at Paramount, Deadline reports, but it’s early days: “details are minimal in regards to whether it’s a fresh new take for the millennium and if older characters will be reprising their roles.” “Girls Trip” scribe Tracy Oliver is producing and “GLOW” writer Marquita Robinson is set to pen the project.
Written and directed by Amy Heckerling, the original 1995 pic is based on Jane Austen’s “Emma” and stars Alicia Silverstone. The Beverly Hills-set story centers on Cher, a popular high schooler with a tendency to focus too much on “fixing” other people’s lives instead of looking inward. Often dismissed as a dumb blonde, the valley girl has a bigger heart and more brains than most give her credit for.
A “Clueless” musical goes into previews November 20 and opens December 11 at The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre at The Pershing Square Signature Center. Dove Cameron (“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”) plays Cher. Kristin Hanggi (“Rock of Ages”) directs with a book by Heckerling.
Oliver has a packed slate. Her upcoming projects include an adaptation of Nicola Yoon’s YA novel “The Sun Is Also a Star,” the story of an NYC-based teen trying to keep her family from being deported back to Jamaica, and a “First Wives Club” small screen reboot. She’s also signed on to make her directorial debut with “Survive the Night,” a horror thriller about four female college students being preyed on at a musical festival on Halloween night.
