“CODA’s” odds of securing the Oscar for Best Picture are looking brighter by the day. Sian Heder’s sophomore feature took home the top honor at Saturday night’s PGA Awards, the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures. The PGA prize “has predicted the Oscar Best Picture winner a staggering 22 out of the past 32 years,” per Deadline.
The honor follows on the heels of a historic win at the SAG Awards, where the coming-of-age story about an aspiring singer who is the only hearing member in a Deaf family won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, making it the first film with a predominantly Deaf cast to top the category.
“CODA” made its world premiere at the 2021 edition of Sundance Film Festival, ” where it made history as the first film to sweep the top U.S. Dramatic Prizes at the fest.
The film is up for a total of three Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay (Heder), and Best Supporting Actor (Troy Kotsur). The Oscars are taking place March 27. Jane Campion is favored to take home the award for Best Director for “The Power of the Dog,” which is also up for Best Picture.
