Creative England Announces Initiatives Aimed at Emerging Producers

“American Honey”

Welcome news for up-and-coming producers based in England and Scotland: the UK’s creative industries agency, Creative England, has launched two new initiatives aimed at helping you kick-start your careers.

Designed to help producers who are on the cusp of a first or second feature, the Producer Hothouse scheme is offering up to ten successful applicants the chance to work at some of the UK’s best known production companies: from the likes of Warp Films (“This Is England”); to Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions (“Before I Go to Sleep”); to Pulse Films (“American Honey”), and more.

Successful entrants “will be able to progress their own projects alongside development responsibilities at host companies,” according to ScreenDaily. “They will also receive a bursary of $12,000 (£9,000) to go towards relocation expenses.”

Also announced was the Creative Producer Initiative, which is being run in collaboration with the British Film Institute’s NET.WORK, another organization which supports emerging talent in the UK film industry. The initiative will offer eight successful applicants the chance to take part in a 10-day program which, according to the launch page, aims to “strengthen their creative film skills” and help them “learn more about developing for other formats and platforms,” giving participants a vital edge in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

The Producer Hothouse initiative will be open to producers based outside of London in England and Scotland, while the Creative Producer Initiative will be open only to England-based producers with no more than one full producer credit (feature or television).

“The role of the producer is fundamental to the film-making process, so we have developed these new initiatives to support our emerging talent in building rewarding, sustainable and flexible careers in the challenging independent film sector,” explained Creative England CEO Caroline Norbury.

More details about both initiatives can be found on Creative England’s website.
