Another “Persuasion” screen adaptation is on the way. In the past year, a Sarah Snook-led retelling of the Jane Austen novel, directed by Mahalia Belo, was announced, and a contemporary update starring Alicia Witt was released — and now there’s word that Dakota Johnson and theater director Carrie Cracknell are teaming up for the latest iteration. The former will star in the modern reimagining and the latter will make her feature directorial debut, according to Deadline.
Hailing from Netflix and MRC Film, the adaptation’s script is by Alice Victoria Winslow and Ron Bass. The project’s producers include Christina Weiss Lurie (“Bruised”), and MRC’s Elizabeth Cantillon (“Concussion”) is among the exec producers.
Published in 1818, “Persuasion” marked Austen’s last complete novel and was released shortly after her death. It sees protagonist Anne Elliot crossing paths once more with Frederick Wentworth, the man she rejected years before but never stopped loving. Anne refused Captain Wentworth’s proposal at the behest of her family and friends, who balked at the couple’s class differences, but always regretted it. When Anne and Wentworth meet again, years after their separation, Anne must decide whether to follow her heart or continue to let others make decisions for her.
Cracknell most recently directed Broadway’s “Sea Wall/A Life,” which nabbed four Tony nominations, including Best Play. She has also helmed productions of “The Deep Blue Sea,” “Medea,” “A Doll’s House,” and more. She served as Artistic Director of the Gate Theatre London and Associate Director at both the Young Vic and The Royal Court.
“Our Friend” and “The High Note” are among Johnson’s more recent credits. The “Fifty Shades” actress will appear next in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Lost Daughter” and Stephanie Allynne and Tig Notaro’s “Am I OK?” The former is an adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s novel of the same name, and the latter is a story of female friendship and self-discovery. Both pics are now in post-production.
