“Patti Cake$” breakout Danielle Macdonald and “Absolutely Fabulous” star Joanna Lumley are joining forces on rom-com set in the world of opera singing competitions. The pair will topline “Falling for Figaro,” Deadline reports.
Scheduled to kick off production this December, the pic follows Millie (Macdonald), “a brilliant young fund manager who decides to leave her unfulfilling job and long-term boyfriend behind to chase her lifelong dream of becoming an opera singer in the Scottish Highlands,” the source summarizes. “She begins intense vocal training lessons with renowned singing teacher and former opera diva Meghan Geoffrey-Bishop (Lumley) and meets Max, another of Meghan’s students, who is also training for an upcoming contest.”
Macdonald has been keeping busy since playing an aspiring rapper in 2017’s “Patti Cake$.” She recently starred in a pic about another competitive scene — beauty pageants. Directed by Anne Fletcher, 2018’s “Dumplin'” tells the story of a teenager who signs up for her mom’s pageant as a form of protest. Her other recent credits include “Unbelievable,” Susannah Grant’s Netflix series inspired by a real sexual assault investigation, and Susanne Bier’s “Bird Box.” You can catch her in Alice Waddington’s “Paradise Hills,” a genre pic about a school for wayward girls, in theaters now. The Australian actress is signed on to topline Nahnatchka Khan’s “White Girl Problems,” a comedy about a woman with a shopping addiction.
“Finding Your Feet” and “Paddington 2” are among Lumley’s recent credits.
