It’s looking more and more likely that Jane Campion will be making history at the upcoming Academy Awards. If Campion receives a directing nod for “The Power of the Dog,” she’ll be the first woman to ever be nominated twice in the category. She previously scored a nom in 1994 for “The Piano.” Nominations for the Directors Guild of America (DGA) Awards have been announced, and the New Zealand filmmaker is among the five nominees for Outstanding Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film. Variety notes that she “joins a tiny list of only 11 women nominated by the DGA for directing.” Her Montana-set story about a dysfunctional family living on a cattle ranch also recently scored a PGA Awards nomination.

Of six nominees in the Outstanding Achievement of a First-Time Feature Film Director category, four are women, including two actresses making their directorial debuts: Maggie Gyllenhaal for “The Lost Daughter,” her portrait of an ambivalent mother, and Rebecca Hall for “Passing,” her period drama about two Black friends who live on opposite sides of the color line. Also up for honors are Tatiana Huenzo and Emma Seligman. The former is being recognized for “Prayers for the Stolen,” a coming-of-age story about three girls in Mexico, and the latter for “Shiva Baby,” a comedy about a college student and sex worker who unexpectedly crosses paths with her sugar daddy and high school girlfriend at a Jewish funeral service she’s attending with her parents.
