HBO Max and CNN Films will introduce viewers to some of the journalists behind the 2020 primary elections. A press release announced that “On the Trail: Inside the 2020 Primaries” will premiere on HBO Max August 6. Katie Hinman and Toby Oppenheimer’s cinema verité doc centers on a team of women journalists covering a “presidential election that will define a generation.”
“On the Trail’s” subjects are Dana Bash, Kaitlan Collins, Jessica Dean, Daniella Diaz, Annie Grayer, Kyung Lah, MJ Lee, Abby Phillip, Arlette Saenz, and Jasmine Wright — a team comprised of rookie reporters and seasoned vets alike.
Hinman, Oppenheimer, Amy Entelis, and Courtney Sexton executive produced the doc. CNN Films produced.
Kicking off a few days before the Iowa caucuses, “On the Trail” features exclusive access to CNN’s political correspondents and embedded campaign journalists, and will see them discussing their professional and personal lives via interviews, as well as reporting on the primary race’s various candidates and campaigns.
“Despite a political season unlike any other, ultimately capped off with a pandemic, these 10 women get the job done,” the press release teases.

Hinman has previously produced news specials and reports for CNN and ABC. She exec produced 2016’s “CNN Presidential Town Hall: America’s Military and the Commander and Chief” and served as senior producer on two 2015 presidential debates.
