The Queen of Country is heading to Netflix. The streamer has picked up a scripted anthology based on Dolly Parton songs, The Hollywood Reporter confirms. If the premise sounds familiar to you, take a brief trip down memory lane: NBC aired a couple of TV movies inspired by the icon’s songs a few years back.
Each episode of the new, untitled anthology will be based on a song by the eight-time Grammy winner. Parton is locked down as a singer-songwriter and exec producer on the series, and will also appear in it. Eight episodes have been ordered.
Parton’s career includes 25 number one hits on the Billboard Country charts. Her best known songs include “I Will Always Love You,” “9 to 5,” and “Jolene.”
In December 2015 NBC aired “Coat of Many Colors,” a TV movie based on Parton’s song of the same name. The pic drew in “13 million total viewers and a 1.8 in the key adults 18-49 demographic, marking the biggest viewership for any TV movie on the broadcast networks since 2012,” the source details. “The sequel, [‘Coat of Many Colors: Circle of Love’] debuted a year later and collected 11.5 million total viewers and a 1.7 in the demo.”
“As a songwriter, I have always enjoyed telling stories through my music,” said Parton. “I am thrilled to be bringing some of my favorite songs to life with Netflix. We hope our show will inspire and entertain families and folks of all generations, and I want to thank the good folks at Netflix and Warner Bros. TV for their incredible support.”
Parton received the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2016 Country Music Awards.
