The recipients of the 42nd annual Gracie Awards have been announced via the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation (AWMF). Taking place June 6 in Beverly Hills, the Gracies “honor exemplary programming created by, for, and about women.” America Ferrera, Drew Barrymore, Samantha Bee, Mariska Hargitay, and Savannah Guthrie will be recognized at the event.
Ferrara will take home the Gracie for lead comedic actress for “Superstore,” while Drew Barrymore is being celebrated for her guest turn on “Odd Mom Out.” Mariska Hargitay (“Law & Order: SVU”) is the winner for lead drama actress. Samantha Bee will be honored for “Full Frontal,” as will Savannah Guthrie for her “Chessy Prout, the St. Paul’s Accuser” interview on “Today.”
In addition to big names onscreen, the Gracies will also shine a light on women behind the scenes in projects like “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” Lenny Letter, “Hairspray: Live!” and “Black Girls Rock!” The projects being recognized at this year’s Gracies “touch on issues spanning from immigration to reproduction rights, race relations to women in the workforce,” a press release details.
The Gracie Awards will spotlight local and student programming, too, at a luncheon in New York June 27. Among the local and student winners are the University of Maryland’s hard news feature, “Behind Closed Doors”; ABC 4 Utah’s hard news feature, “Rape Cases in Utah Courts”; and Juliana Spano of Radio Hofstra University for the segments on her talk show, “A League of Our Own.”
“If we learned one thing this year, it is that the strength, courage, and contributions of women are crucial and necessary components in moving the world forward,” AWMF Chair Sarah Foss said in a statement. “As we look to honor women in media, we take pause and recognize the millions of women who are not able to use their voice and creativity to share their message with the world. We hear you. We are you. And we stand beside you.”
Check out the AWMF website for more information about the foundation and the Gracies.
