Elsie Fisher isn’t done making you cringe yet. After breaking out in the delightful and, at times, painfully awkward coming-of-age pic “Eighth Grade,” Fisher has booked a staring role in “The Shaggs,” a musical feature inspired by an infamous rock album recorded by three teen sisters. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news.
Based on the real-life story of the Wiggin sisters, “The Shaggs” tells the story of making “Philosophy of the World,” The Shagg’s notorious 1968 album.
Ken Kwapis (“Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”) will direct. Joy Gregory, who previously told the Shaggs’ story in an off-Broadway musical, will pen the script. Both the stage and film musicals are inspired by a 1999 Susan Orlean New Yorker article.
Alex Beattie (“Happyish”) is among the project’s producers.
Before “Eighth Grade,” Fisher had said she was “done with acting.” She explained, “I was a teenager with a lot of acne and roles for teenagers are disingenuous a lot of the time, and if they want to hire an actor to play a teenager, they’re not gonna hire a teenager with a lot of acne. They’re going to hire an 18-year-old who looks 12.”
“McFarland, USA” and “Despicable Me” are among Fisher’s other credits.
