Elle Fanning is re-teaming with her “Galveston” director, and this time she’ll be joined by her sister, Dakota Fanning. The pair are signed on to topline Mélanie Laurent’s next pic, TriStar Pictures’ adaptation of “The Nightingale.” The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news.
Based on Kristin Hannah’s best-selling 2015 novel of the same name, the coming-of-age story is set on the eve of WWII and centers on two sisters’ “struggle to survive and resist the German occupation of France. It was inspired by the courageous women of the French Resistance who helped downed Allied airmen escape Nazi-occupied territory and hid Jewish children,” the source notes.
Dana Stevens (“Safe Haven”) is penning the script, and Elizabeth Cantillon is producing via her Cantillon Company banner.
“The Nightingale will be the first time we act on screen together. We have played the same character at different ages but have never spoken to each other in front of a camera. For years, we have looked for a film to do with one another and then this gem appeared,” the Fannings said. “As sisters, to share our artistry with each other while bringing such a powerful sister story to life is a dream come true. We are so lucky to have our fearless director, Melanie Laurent, to guide us along on the journey. Let’s do this, sister!”
You can catch Elle Fanning in theaters now in “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.” “Teen Spirit,” “Mary Shelley,” and “The Beguiled” are among her recent credits. She’ll portray Catherine the Great in Hulu’s upcoming miniseries “The Great,” described as a “genre-bending” look at the Empress of Russia and the country’s longest-ruling female leader.
Dakota Fanning was last seen in “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.” Her recent credits include “Ocean’s Eight,” “American Pastoral,” and “The Alienist.” She’s signed on to star in a sequel of the latter for TNT. Titled “The Angel of Darkness,” the series sees Sara Howard (Fanning) opening up her own private detective agency and seeking help from familiar faces to hunt down a killer.
Laurent and Elle Fanning collaborated on 2018 thriller “Galveston,” which marked the former’s English-language directorial debut. “Breathe” and “Diving” are among the French filmmaker’s other credits. Also an actress, she’s appeared on-screen in titles such as “Now You See Me,” “Beginners,” and “Inglourious Basterds.”
