In a Reddit AMA, Ellen Page answered questions from fans on numerous subjects including finding female roles in Hollywood. Page’s latest role is in The East, about an anarchist group, which is co-written by Brit Marling.
Page mentions the lack of roles for women in Hollywood and how that fuels her to find complex parts.
Considering there are so few roles for women and the roles that do exist can be so narrow in their idea of what a woman can be, it is extremely important
to me to be involved with projects where the girl is in charge of her own destiny and is honest and well written.
She was also asked about her thoughts on the feminist porn movement.
I think we are in a very scary time right now. The rhetoric from the right wing is terrifying to me. I think feminist porn is crucial. To only have porn
from the male perspective is damaging. Women are sexual creatures, as much as men and that needs to be embraced.
Page joins the growing number of actresses speaking out about the lack of roles for women in Hollywood. Hopefully, their continued speaking out gets notice from the industry. And with the previous news that Page will be soon making her directorial debut, we know she’ll be creating more opportunities for great female roles out there.
