Emma Stone to Make Broadway Debut in ‘Cabaret’

Emma Stone is coming to Broadway. The Help actress will replace Michelle Williams as Sally Bowles in Cabaret when the latter’s extended run in the show comes to an end on November 9. Stone will star in the production, directed by Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall, from November 11 to February 2015.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that the “attraction of Cabaret for such top-tier talent as … Stone speaks of the revisionist production, the knockout material, and the dramatically challenging role of Sally, a second-rate Brit singer living in Weimar-era Berlin, determined to bury her head in decadent partying and ignore the encroaching rise of the Nazis.” This meaty role will mark Stone’s ambitious Broadway debut.

Stone was rumored to be in negotiations for the part back when preparations were being made to relaunch the Broadway hit last season. She was unable to join the production at that time due to scheduling conflicts with The Amazing Spider-Man 2. We also know that Emma Stone can sing (have you seen her audition for a VH1 reality show as a teen?) and has some serious stage presence as her viral lip syncing battle with Jimmy Fallon demonstrates.

This revival of the classic officially opened on April 24 and has grossed over $15.7 million since. Stone’s co-stars will include Alan Cumming, Linda Emond, and Gayle Rankin.

Other actresses to play the role of Sally in earlier incarnations include Jennifer Jason Leigh, Joely Fisher, and Brooke Shields. Stone can next be seen onscreen in Birdman, which will premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival and open in US theaters on October 17.
