Tennis fans are in luck. Serena Williams is one of many sports subjects featured in Don Van Natta, Jr.’s new ESPN docuseries, “Backstory.”
With the 2019 U.S. Open set to begin later this month, it comes as no surprise that last year’s Grand Slam controversy between the tennis superstar and chair umpire Carlos Ramos will serve as the show’s debut episode, “Serena vs. The Umpire.” A press release confirmed the news.
Playing against Naomi Osaka for what would have been her 24th Grand Slam victory, Williams was given a warning, point penalty, and an ultimate game loss following a heated debate with umpire Ramos. Amidst chaos and boos from a confused audience, Osaka received her first Grand Slam title, beating Williams 6-2, 6-4.
Van Natta seeks to understand the complications and discourse surrounding the “ugliest finish in Grand Slam history” through interviews with individuals on both sides of the debate. Interviewees include match broadcaster Pam Shriver, retired line umpire Palma Chryst, Roxane Gay, tennis journalists, and others.
Last year’s HBO docuseries, “Being Serena,” followed Williams during and post-pregnancy as she prepared for what would ultimately become one of the most controversial years of her career. The series grabbed last year’s PGA award for Outstanding Sports Program.
“Backstory” premieres this Sunday, August 18 on ABC and will subsequently re-air across ESPN networks. Check out the trailer for Williams’ episode below.
