“Maiden” tells the story of the first-ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World Race. The year was 1989, and sailing was very male-dominated — a fact that wasn’t lost on skipper Tracy Edwards. “In the end, we just said, we don’t actually care what you say we can and can’t do,” says Edwards in our exclusive featurette of “Maiden.” “We’re just going to do it anyway, so think what you like.”
The clip sees Maiden’s original crew — and the documentary’s producers and director — sounding off on the sexism that Edwards and Co. dealt with in the media. “Described as a “tinful of tarts” by a well-known journalist, the sailors were “dismissed as a sideshow” and constantly fielding questions “about hair and makeup.” The media seemed to ask, “Why on earth are you attempting to do this? You should be staying at home.”
“Maiden” made its world premiere at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival and went on to screen at fests such as Sundance, SXSW, and Sydney. You can catch it on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital October 1.
