Exclusive: The Daughters of Holocaust Survivors Uncover Family History in “Past Life” Clip

“Past Life”

“You and I were born to a violent, greedy man,” Nana (Nelly Tagar) tells her younger sister Sephi (Joy Rieger) in our exclusive clip of “Past Life.” Set in 1977 Jerusalem, the drama centers around the mysteries surrounding the women’s father, a Holocaust victim.

When someone describes Sephi as the “daughter of a murderer,” she’s skeptical about the claim. “I told you she looked crazy,” Sephi tells her sister. But Nana doesn’t seem all that surprised by the accusation. “It doesn’t sound so crazy,” she says. Nana goes on to tell Sephi about the illegal abortions their gynecologist father performed and describes how he used to beat her.

Watch the clip to see the sisters discuss their father’s past and decide whether or not they want to learn more about it.

“This profoundly moving drama confronts a burden of history that is still very much part of the Israeli present,” according to the film’s official synopsis.

Written and directed by Avi Nesher (“The Secrets”), “Past Life” opens in NY and LA on June 2.
