Deborah Davis is taking inspiration from another controversial monarch. The “Favourite” scribe is following up her portrait of Queen Anne with a series inspired by Marie Antoinette. Titled “Marie Antoinette,” the project comes from Canal+ and Banijay and is currently filming. Deadline confirmed the news.
The eight-part drama will see Emilia Schüle (“Berlin Station”) playing Marie Antoinette, the last queen of France, who was famously executed by guillotine during the French Revolution. Kirsten Dunst played the pop culture mainstay in Sofia Coppola’s 2006 feature “Marie Antoinette.”
Davis created the series and penned it alongside writers Louise Ironside (“The Split”), Avril E. Russell (“All on a Summer’s Day”), and Chloë Moss (“Run Sister Run”). “Filming will take place in historical locations including the Châteaux of Versailles, Vaux-le-Vicomte, Lésigny, Champs, Voisins, and in the studios of Bry-sur-Marne,” per the source.
Davis received an Oscar nod for “The Favourite’s” screenplay alongside her co-writer, Tony McNamara. Olivia Colman took home the Best Actress honor for her portrayal of Queen Anne.
