The upcoming Female Eye Film Festival (FeFF) will include more than 90 pics directed by women, a press release has announced. Established in 2001 in response to the lack of women-helmed fare at international fests, FeFF is an annual celebration of female filmmakers. The 16th edition, to be held June 26 – July 1 in Toronto, Canada, will feature works from Melanie Mayron, Valerie Buhagiar, and Emma Semeria, among many others.
Female Eye will open with Semeria’s short “June July.” The French-language project centers on a young woman’s two-month stay at a psychiatric hospital. Following “June July’s” premiere will be the fest’s gala feature, Buhagiar’s “It’s Hard to Be Human.” The experimental film sees the daughter of God caught in a world between life and death.
“Painkillers,” a horror-infused drama directed by Roxy Shih, is also set to screen at FeFF. The film is about a successful surgeon who begins to turn into a literal monster after his son’s death.
Female Eye will also host tributes to Debra Zimmerman, Executive Director of Women Make Movies (WMM) NY, and documentarian Liz Marshall.
The fest’s closing film is Mayron’s “Snapshots,” a multi-generational family tale. Set at a lake house over a weekend, the pic follows three women — a matriarch, her daughter, and her granddaughter — as their past, present, and future selves collide.
“This year we celebrate so many talented women. It is a blessing and a privilege to share your work,” said FeFF Founder and Exec Director Leslie Ann Coles. “I speak for the Female Eye when I say we will continue to serve the interests of our sisters who are media makers, artists, and story creators for as long as our stories are being told and until gender bias and discrimination, in all their manifestations, are eradicated.”
