Rachel Bloom has sung about everything from heavy boobs to period sex to anti-depressants, and now the Golden Globe-winning “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” co-creator and star is turning to “The Nanny” for inspiration. Bloom has been tapped to write the lyrics and music for a new Broadway musical inspired by the ’90s sitcom starring Fran Drescher. A press release announced the news.
“The Nanny” aired on CBS from 1993-1999. Based partly on Drescher’s own life growing up in Queens, New York, the sitcom tells the story of a cosmetics saleswoman (Drescher) who finds herself working as a nanny for a British Broadway producer after being dumped and fired by her boyfriend and employer. The comedy, which has aired in over 90 countries and more than 30 languages, earned 12 Emmy Award nominations over its six-season run.
The original series creators of “The Nanny,” Drescher and Peter Marc Jacobson, are writing the book for the musical. Bloom is collaborating on the music with Adam Schlesinger.
A production timeline for the new “Nanny” has yet to be announced.
“We are so excited to be working on the Broadway musical ‘The Nanny,’” said Drescher and Jacobson. “We’re equally excited that the wildly talented Rachel Bloom will be writing the lyrics and music with the fantastic Adam Schlesinger, and to have the brilliant Marc Bruni directing. Nobody is cast yet – we’re plotting – but we feel confident we will find a fabulous actress who is funny, charming, and has a great voice.”
Bloom added, “’The Nanny’ was a fundamental part of my childhood because it was the first time I saw an openly Jewish female protagonist on television. The story of Fran Fine, however, is a universal one that has touched the hearts of people of every race, religion, and orientation. I am so proud to be using the characters established by ‘The Nanny’ to tell a new story about one woman’s journey to becoming proud of who she is and what makes her different.”
“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” ran for four seasons on The CW from 2015 to 2019.
