NBC has ordered a pilot for a family comedy based on the life of “Fresh Off the Boat” producer Kourtney Kang.
The comedy, The Hollywood Reporter writes, will “explore what it’s like to grow up as the only girl in the only mixed-race family in the suburbs of Philadelphia, dealing with real-world issues like race and gender while never losing focus of her life goal — to become a Laker Girl like her idol, Paula Abdul.”
Kang’s “Fresh Off the Boat” producing partner Nahnatchka Khan will produce, and Fred Savage will direct. Kang will pen the script.
Kang, who previously executive produced “How I Met Your Mother,” has an overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV, and Kahn recently signed her own deal as well. The multiyear deal will see Khan creating, writing, developing, and supervising projects under her preexisting Fierce Baby Productions banner. This new comedy marks the first sale for Khan and her new head of development, Mandy Summers, for the label.
